Naked on the Inside comes at a time when the western world has never been more obsessed with body image. It asks a simple but audacious question: Beyond our clothes and skin, who are we? Five extraordinary people from around the world reveal their bodies and share their secrets in a unique documentary that explores our obsession with body and self-image.
In Taiwan, a female Sunday school teacher lives a covert life as a man, binding her double-D-cup breasts each day before going off to work. In Queensland, Australia, a mother of two fights the breast cancer she feels she unconsciously created by hiding an affair from her husband. In San Francisco, a supermodel obsesses to achieve bodily perfection, while a 350-pound "fat activist" comes out big, loud and proud. And in the UK, a critically acclaimed dancer with no legs falls head over heels in love for the very first time.
Superficially, they share nothing in common, but in Naked on the Inside, profound connections arise as each person creates an intimate series of clothed and naked portraits before the camera. One by one, they reveal their unique relationship with their body-it has either served them well, brought them pain or fame, is at odds with who they are, in decay, or deemed "perfect" and "beautiful". Stripped bare, we see them in their bedrooms and most private spaces where there is nothing left to hide.
Australian filmmaker Kim Farrant has built a reputation for compassionately exposing the "unguarded moment" in her subjects. In Naked on the Inside, she intimately unravels what lies beneath the skin. It's ultimately a mediation on the soul-bold, humorous, heartfelt and quite unlike anything you've seen before. The team behind her includes executive producer Jack Lechner, one of the masterminds responsible for the Academy Award-winning documentary The Fog Of War.
